Humble Beginnings

Montreat College can trace its roots back to 1898. The Montreat Retreat Association was established by John Monroe, the owner of the Asheville Citizen-Times. Monroe's vision was to create a meeting space dedicated to renewal and fellowship.

In 1916, the association established the Montreat Normal School, with Rev. F.W. Stephenson as its first president. The school initially offered an academic program and a Bible study course. In 1922, it expanded its offerings to include a junior college program.
